Bioaccumulation patterns of methyl mercury and essential fatty acids in lacustrine planktonic food webs and fish.

Organisms of the planktonic food web convey essential nutrients as well as contaminants to animals at higher trophic levels. We measured concentrations of methyl mercury (MeHg) and essential fatty acids (EFAs, key nutrients for aquatic food webs) in four size categories of planktonic organisms - seston (10-64 microm), micro-(100-200 microm), meso-(200-500 microm), and macrozooplankton (>500 mic...

Nonlinear PDEs and Scale Dependence

The properties of nonlinear PDEs that generate filtered solutions are explored with particular attention given to the constraints on the residual term. The analysis is carried out for nonlinear PDEs with an emphasis on evolution problems recast on space-time-scale. We examine the role of approximation that allow for the generation of solutions on isolated scale slices.

Food webs

Ecosystems, whether they are forests, lakes or coral reefs, consist of a diverse range of species that interact with each other in many ways. As ecologists we want to understand how these complex systems function as a whole and how they respond to human impacts such as harvesting and environmental change. A mechanistic understanding of the underlying biological processes will allow us to predic...

UV effects on marine planktonic food webs: A synthesis of results from mesocosm studies.

UV irradiance has a broad range of effects on marine planktonic organisms. Direct and indirect effects on individual organisms have complex impacts on food-web structure and dynamics, with implications for carbon and nutrient cycling. Mesocosm experiments are well suited for the study of such complex interrelationships. Mesocosms offer the possibility to conduct well-controlled experiments with...
